South Carolina Dental Association's Cavity Free Community Campaign

"No Cavity Instructions"

In April, 2007 the CDC announced that the caries rate in children 0-5 years of age, increased nearly 20% from 1999-2004.

Below is a list of things parents can and must do at home daily to help ensure a cavity free generation of kids. Patient specific, professional in-office recommendations and procedures are left for the office visit, the “dental home” of the child.

These instructions concentrate on home-based activities and parental dental appointments for the parents and the child every 6 months, beginning no later than 12 months of age; eating the correct foods; brushing several times daily, and flossing at night, among other things.

In any event, these instructions can be printed up in "prescription" size, tablet size, or single sheet size pads. They can then be reviewed and given to any parent, adult, teacher, nurse, or caregiver, who may cross paths with a child, in addition to the children. They can, also, be used as an outline for presentations to parents and school teachers, as talking points to broadcast, print, and/or video media representatives. They can even be used as table tents or mementos at special health care events for children and parents.

As you can see, the children’s health focus is on the parent, the caregivers, and the adults, not solely the child. We believe this is a novel idea for NCDHM since we can not continue to routinely delegate the responsibility for the oral health of 0-5 year olds to the kids.
